What's New in GATE 2024?

The official GATE 2024 Brochure has been released on 30th August 2023. This year, the GATE Exam will be conducted by the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore (IISc). Let's check out the latest GATE 2024 news and updates below. 

  • The GATE 2024 application fees have been increased to Rs. 1800 from previous fee of Rs. 1700 as well as extended period fee is increased to Rs. 2300 which was Rs. 2200 earlier.
  • Data Science & Artificial Intelligence is a new paper introduced to the GATE 2024 Exam. As a result, instead of 29 papers, a total of 30 GATE exam papers will be administered.  
  • Computer Science and Information Technology (CS) and Data Science & Artificial Intelligence (DA) are the two new paper combinations introduced in GATE 2024.
  • The Exam centres in international cities have been removed. There will be no exam centre outside India. 
  • As per the latest GATE 2024 information brochure, The GATE committee has set up new centers in Telangana such as Adilabad, Kothagudem, Medak, and Nalgonda to help students prepare for the IIT GATE 2024 exam. Previously, only Nizamabad, Suryapet Khammam, Kodad, Warangal, Karimnagar, and Hyderabad Gate Examination Centers were available within IIT Madras and IISc Zone.
  • Candidates pursuing Engineering/Technology/
    Architecture/Science/Humanities in their third or higher years of their UG program can now apply for the GATE Exam, according to the most recent update to the GATE 2024 Brochure.

GATE 2024 Highlights

The Graduate Aptitude Test for Engineering or the GATE Exam is conducted every year by one of the IITs namely IIT Bombay, IIT Delhi, IIT Kharagpur, IIT Kanpur, IIT Guwahati, IIT Roorkee, IIT Madras, IIT Bangalore, or the IISc Bangalore. IISc Bangalore will be organising the GATE 2024 Exam.

  • A candidate is allowed to appear for one or a maximum of two subject papers only. Two Paper combinations have to be chosen from the given list of combinations of papers. The final allotment of two papers will still be subject to the availability of infrastructure and dates.
  • The GATE 2024 Exam will be conducted in a Computer Based Test (CBT) format with centres in 200 cities/towns across India.

Negative Marking

For a wrong answer chosen in an MCQ, there will be a negative marking. For 1-mark MCQ, 1/3 mark will be deducted for a wrong answer. Likewise, for 2-mark MCQ, a 2/3 mark will be deducted for each wrong answer. There is no negative marking for wrong answer(s) to MSQ and NAT questions.

What is GATE Exam?

The GATE Exam i.e. Graduate Aptitude Test for Engineering is a national-level examination conducted jointly by the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore, and the seven Indian Institutes of Technology (IIT Bombay, IIT Delhi, IIT Guwahati, IIT Kanpur, IIT Kharagpur, IIT Madras, and IIT Roorkee) on behalf of the National Coordination Board (NCB)-GATE, Department of Higher Education, Ministry of Education (MoE), Government of India. The GATE 2024 examination will be conducted in different cities across India only. The examination would be a Computer Based Test (CBT).

GATE 2024 Notification

The GATE Notification 2024 has been officially released by the GATE 2024 organising institute IISc Bangalore.  The GATE 2024 Official Notification stated that the GATE 2024 Registration Date was from 30th August 2023 to 29th September 2023 (Extended till 13th October 2023 with late fees). The GATE 2024 Exam Date as per the official notification is scheduled on 3rd, 4th, 10th, and 11th of February 2024.

GATE Application Form 2024

Candidates should register themselves on the GATE GOAPS (GATE Online Application Processing System) Portal. The GATE GOAPS is an online application portal where candidates need to register themselves and create a login ID, and password. Further, they need to log in using their credentials and complete the GATE Application Process 2024 by filling in their details and uploading their documents like photographs, signatures, and other important documents. In the end, after filling out all the necessary details they need to pay the GATE Application Fee to complete their application process. 

Step 1: Visit the official website of GOAPS.

Step 2: Register and fill in the required details on the registration portal. 

Step 3: Your Registration ID will be generated and a password is needed to be created by the candidate. Save the Registration ID and password for future reference.

Step 4: Log in with the Registration ID and password to complete the registration process.

Step 5: Upload a scanned recent photograph, signature, and other necessary documents. Candidates can use the Testbook Photo cropping tool to resize their image and signature as per the guidelines. 

Step 6: Click on Save and Submit. 

Step 7: Pay the application fee through any of the electronic payment modes.

GATE Exam Fees

The application fee for the GATE 2024 is neither refundable nor transferable. Payments have to be made online by using net banking / debit card / credit card / wallet / UPI / etc. As per the prevailing norms, additional online transaction charges or bank charges may be applicable. These charges will be specified on the payment portal.

  • The GATE 2024 Registration fee does not include any service charges, processing fees, and any other charges that the banks may levy. 
  • For two papers the amount of fee is twice that of a single paper.
  • Candidates with benchmark disability will be eligible for fee concession.

GATE Selection Process

The GATE 2024 Selection Process has been officially announced along with latest notification 

  • There will be two cutoffs- one GATE Qualifying Cutoff which will be released by the GATE Committee and the other one is the GATE Admission Cutoff released by respective institutions for the admission process. Candidates need to qualify for both to secure admission in the IITs and NITs. 
  • Call for admissions to M.Tech. /PhD or any other program will be advertised separately by the respective institutions and GATE Committee is NOT responsible for the admission process.
  • GATE qualification does not assure a PSU job, as that depends on the recruitment procedure of the concerned PSU. GATE Committee is not responsible for any employment opportunities. The qualified candidates must check newspapers and other reliable sources for any such information.
  • For securing a PSU Job candidates will have to sit for an interview and the recruitment decision will be taken solely by the PSU Recruitment Authorities. 

GATE Eligibility 2024

The GATE Eligibility Criteria 2024 is released. However, there will be no age limit to appear for the GATE 2024 examination. A candidate who is currently studying in the third or higher years of any undergraduate degree program or has already completed any Government approved degree program in Engineering / Technology / Architecture / Science / Commerce / Arts is eligible for appearing in the GATE 2024 Exam. Candidates must ensure the below-mentioned educational qualifications under GATE Eligibility Criteria before applying for the GATE Exam 2024 Applications. Candidates should take note that certificates/qualifications awarded by professional bodies/institutions upto 31st May 2013 will stand recognized.

Can I use a physical calculator during the GATE exam?

No, a physical calculator is not allowed in the exam. Candidates are provided with a virtual calculator. Before appearing for the exam, getting familiar with the GATE virtual calculator is advised.

What is a good rank in the GATE exam?

A GATE score under 200 is considered a good rank in the GATE exam for admission to IITs. To get placed in PSUs through the GATE exam, candidates must score under 100. While in the case of NITs, a rank under 300 is also considered good.

Can I give a GATE exam after BCA?

Candidates from BCA backgrounds are not eligible for the GATE exam. Those who fall under the following courses are eligible. However, candidates who have done their MCA are still eligible for the GATE Exam.

How much CGPA is required for GATE?

According to the eligibility criteria, no minimum CGPA or percentage is required to appear for the exam. Candidates with backlogs can also sit for the exam provided they clear their backlogs and provide the no backlog certificate upon qualifying for the GATE exam.

What is the selection process for GATE 2024?

GATE is merely an entrance exam. Based on the obtained score one can choose to seek admission for Post Graduate studies like M.Tech or opt to apply for a job in PSUs.

Can I change my GATE exam city after submitting the online application form?

Yes, only after the last date for online submission of applications, a request for the change of examination city or category will be entertained. The last date for this requiest has not been announced yet. Along with additional payment and any request post this date will not be considered.
