Satyendranath Tagore was the First IAS Officer of India. He was born on June 1, 1842, in Jorasanko, Kolkata, to Maharshi Debendranath Tagore and Sarada Devi. He is a notable individual in Indian history. He was an accomplished Indian public servant, poet, composer, writer, social reformer, and linguist. In 1864, he was the first Indian to join the Indian Civil Service (ICS), setting the way for people who came after him.
Satyendranath Tagore was successful at work and also had a full life outside of work. He had a son named Surendranath Tagore and a daughter named Indira Devi Chaudhurani with his wife Jnanadanandini Devi.

Satyendranath Tagore was born on June 1, 1842, in Jorasanko in Calcutta. He was the second eldest son of the renowned Tagore family. His family held great influence in Bengal and India at that time. Satyendranath grew up in a family with a lot of culture and history. This helped him become such a wonderful individual and achieve so much. His younger brother was poet and writer, Rabindranath Tagore, who also went on to win the Nobel Prize.
Satyendranath Tagore made significant contributions to society. He was the first IAS officer of India. He also possessed remarkable talents as an author, songwriter, and linguist. He championed the cause of women's freedom in Indian society. He worked to eradicate societal practices such as “purdah”. His marriage to Jnanadanandini Devi further fueled his efforts for women's progress.

Satyendranath's ideology was influenced by the Brahmo Samaj. The Brahmo Samaj was a socio-religious reform movement initiated during the Bengal Renaissance. It was started by Raja Rammohan Roy. Satyendranath's father, Devendranath Tagore, was also a prominent leader of the Brahmo Samaj. Taking ideas from this movement, he worked to change the way Indian women lived. He became a force for social change.
Becoming the first Indian IAS officer was not an easy feat for Satyendranath Tagore. During British rule, the Indian Civil Service was restricted to British candidates. From the mid-nineteenth century, Indians were also able to write for these exams. Indian Civil Service came into existence in 1861. Indian candidates had to travel to England to compete with their British peers. At the time, this travel was a big problem for the average Indian.
Satyendranath's friend, Monomohum Ghose, played a crucial role in encouraging him. Ghose supported his journey to England for the IAS examination. In 1863, Satyendranath became the first IAS officer in India. After completing his trial training, he returned to India in 1864. He was appointed to the Bombay Presidency. His tenure as an IAS officer spanned 30 years. During this tenure, he served as a judge in Satara until his retirement in 1897.
